In this episode, Host Yndia sits down with legacy owner Yvonne Blake of Hakim’s Bookstore. Founded in 1959, Hakim’s Bookstore is the first and oldest Black-owned bookstore in Philadelphia and is considered one of the oldest operating Black-owned bookstores in the U.S. They discuss the highs and lows related to Black entrepreneurship and women of color-owned businesses, what it “looks like” to support such businesses, and specifically the future of Black-owned bookstores in the U.S. Hakim’s Bookstore is a mainstay in the community, inspiring the development of more recent independent Black-owned bookstores in the Philadelphia area. Its roots run deep in the Black community and remains a source for education not readily accessible to all. Be sure to listen, learn and support!
