Spring is in full swing! And while the month of April often brings rain to blossoming flowers and trees, the month can also inspire hope, represent resurrection, and encourage community.  April also marks Citizen Science Month!

Founded in 2016 by SciStarter (initially as a “Citizen Science Day”), it has since expanded to a month-long effort to highlight community-participatory science projects that endeavor to collectively impact and accelerate scientific research, policy and local actions to improve the lives and wellbeing for all.

Communities are encouraged to engage in “acts of science” that are relevant to their needs and concerns.  These acts may include activities from crowd sourcing, using online resources to track environmental trends to using mobile devices for behavioral/mental health studies.  The purpose of these “acts of science” is to link innovation to the remediation of social concerns, while also encouraging the integration of diverse perspectives and experiences in community-based solutions.

Yet, engaging in “acts of science” is dependent on people having access to and utilizing affordable technology and other innovations. In 2025 there remains a significant portion of Black and Brown communities that have limited access to technology, internet and digital literacy programs in comparison to other groups—and not just in the U.S.!  The digital divide adversely impacts people’s employability, AI education and skill development, and their overall ability to  thrive in today’s tech landscape and contribute to scientific innovations.

Still, there is hope!  For this month’s podcast episode, we delve into the topic of representation of Blackness in tech and bridging the digital divide with guest, Dr. Shadan Deleveaux, as it relates to his role as a global recruiter for Google and as co-founder of the nonprofit, Technologies for Families in Need (TechFIN).  Be sure to listen to learn more about how you can support bridging the divide and encourage “acts of science” in your local community this April and beyond.

Episode 56 with Shadan Deleveaux debuts Tuesday, April 15 2025 and will be available on https://yndialorickwilmot.com/talking-journeysb2b-a-podcast-episodes/talking-journeysb2b-a-podcast-episodes/ and across all podcast platforms.

Can’t wait to hear your thoughts!

Peace and blessings,
